The history of Cooper tires
What was to become the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company was founded in 1914 in Akron, Ohio by two brothers in law that bought an old company in order to produce tire patches and repair kits. Because the business was going well, three years later they purchased Giant Tire & Rubber Company, wishing to move up and produce tires. Because production took a lot of space, the company moved to Findley, Ohio where it is still present nowadays.
In 1919, an investor named Cooper created a plant for manufacturing new tires in Findley and the two companies merged with another one in 1930 in order to create The Master Tire & Rubber Company. The Second World War was a profitable period for the newly created company because they converted their production to inflatable rafts, lifesaving vests and waterproof bags at the army's request. In addition, they produced rubber decoy tanks and many boats that participated at the Normandy Landings were built by this company. Soon after the war, in 1946, the company changed its name to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and in 1960, it was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Quality and tradition made Cooper tires very appreciated especially in the United States and brought the company among the biggest tire producers in the world.
